scenes from last night

Oh Halloween. People in Savannah are weird everyday of the year, so on Halloween they are especially interesting. People watching at it's very finest happened last night. I didn't really dress up, but I went out anyway to admire everyone else's costumes. Jacob made a last minute decision to be Clark Kent and he looked so cute in his glasses. Amanda had been planning on being a garden gnome all year and looked awesome. People kept stopping her on the street to look at the costume, I think they just get weirded out when a girl wears a beard, and it was a long beard. Tara was the big bad wolf with an awesome head piece.

We ended up at Jen's & Friends, a bar with over 100 different kinds of martinis and beer. I usually get a Hendricks and Lavender martini, which i started with last night, but I was also introduced to the Savannah Bee Company Martini. GOOD GOD it was delicious. I woke up this morning thinking about it.

I'd say a good time was had by all.

Happy Halloween!

simple times

Who could even think of not loving Amy Sedaris? I mean aside from Strangers with Candy and her hilarious book I Like You, she just seems delightful! I LOVE her sarcasm and sometimes inappropriate sense of humor mixed with a little bit of class. Take her book I Like You, there's recipes for upside down pineapple cake only pages away from a graphic explanation on how to clean your lady parts before company. Need I say more? So of course I'm excited about her new book Simple Times, and I can't wait to pick it up. I can't wait to learn how to craft crab claw roach clips and tinfoil balls, sigh.

PS. My apologies for being MIA the last week, I'll try not to let it happen again!

50 dresses for 50 states

I always enjoyed the episodes of Project Runway where the contestants would have to construct dresses out of unusual objects {hello jeffery}, so when my friend sent me this article I thought it was really interesting. Robin Barcus Slonina is an installation artist working on a project called "States of Dresses." She's constructing dresses that represent each state out of things that the states would be most recognized for. It's a clever idea and I can't wait to see where it goes!

green truck pub

Last night a couple of friends and I tried this new midtown pub. Aside from the lack of advertising for the new restaurant, I thought it was great. Nice, comfortable atmosphere, decent beer and wine selection and locally soured food. Everything was made in house, including the dressings, pickles and amazing pimento cheese. The burgers and sandwiches were delicious and so were the french fries, which can sometimes be a deal breaker so I was quite happy.

I also think the logo is cute and I love that it's personal. The owner has an green truck just like in the logo, in beautiful condition and it's parked right out front, a nice touch. Also the service was pretty good, which, for savannah, is a HUGE deal.

I definitely recommend checking it out!

sunday dinners

I love Sundays. Brunch, football, food; something about them just feels different, more relaxing. When Jacob has off we try to spend the day doing something together. This usually means cooking, bloody marys in hand, while football plays in the background. He's also a bit of a beer geek and likes to get together with beer buddies to taste some special bottles. So yesterday we did all of these things.

We have a jalapeno plant in the backyard that I swear to you is on steroids and has produced like six or seven batches in the last couple of months. We couldn't figure out how to use them all up. We've pickled some and made guacamole and chile with others, but we needed something that would use up a larger number. So yesterday we made jalapeno poppers stuffed with cheddar and cream cheese. They were delicious and we were so happy that all those little guys didn't go to waste.
We found green tomatoes at the farmer's market saturday and fried those up too. A little bit of homemade ranch dressing and the fried stuff was good to go. Jacob spent the day smoking two whole chickens after coating in spices and man, they were so good and tender.
I play helper when Jacob cooks, but I'm a much better baker, so that's usually my big contribution. I made two pies, an apple custard and a buttermilk. Buttermilk pies are a southern thing, but even in the south they're not that common. They're amazing though. Light and lemony , perfect with a little bit of homemade whipped cream. yum.

Buttermilk Pie
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 baked 9-inch deep-dish pie shell

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine butter and sugar until sugar is completely incorporated. Add egg yolks and mix well to combine. Add flour, lemon juice, nutmeg and salt. With the mixer running, slowly add buttermilk. Mix well and set aside.

  • In another bowl, whip egg whites until they form soft peaks. Pour a small amount of the buttermilk mixture into the whites. Fold gently to combine. Gently fold egg white mixture into remaining buttermilk mixture until just combined.

  • Pour custard into baked pie shell. Bake in the middle of the oven until filling is lightly browned and barely moves when the pie is jiggled, about 45 to 50 minutes. Cool in a rack and serve warm or at room temperature.

  • Maybe you can make it next sunday! :)

    fashion week invites

What I wouldn't do to be invited to Fashion Week shows in NYC, especially if it meant getting these amazing invitations. Nothing is better than receive invitations or paper products in the mail that are so beautiful you can't bring yourself to throw them away. It can be kind of bad, if you're anything like me and you let it all pile up over the years, forgetting that it's only paper. The wonderful thing about these is that you can actually use them, well some of them, long after the actual show. Well, maybe not the one with the macarons, those would be eaten in about an hour.

    white washed custard

On Sunday the ladies and I went out for brunch at Soho Cafe. Later on we went back to Tara's where she shot some images of Jocelyn for an upcoming Custard ad. Tara shot this in a completely white space and it's just dreamy.

Oh to have legs for days. If I did, I'd be wearing these hot looks from secret squirrel everyday.

    must have fall lineup

You may be sick of the fall posts, but I suggest you get over it because I can't stop. Some of my favorite things for fall, I just love the color palette and the warm, comfy look of everything. I suppose these things could be used year round, especially the cowhide rug that I WILL be purchasing for the house sometime soon (yes Jacob we need it). I've wanted to put this up here for a couple of weeks but I keep changing and adding things to it. I finally had to edit it down and stop looking because it seriously could have gone on forever. What's left is a good group of things that will definitely help you look the part of fall.

    what the what gap!?

I do not care for this new logo. Not one bit. The Gap logo is iconic, and while I realize that change is good and sometimes companies need to rebrand to bring in different audiences, this was a poor decision. The stores aren't hurting in a way that requires a full rebranding and with a Gap in EVERY town (seriously it's like the Starbucks, completely taking over) it just doesn't seem necessary to boost business, in fact I think it could end up hurting it. Listen, I love me some Helvetica which is what is used in this new logo, don't get me wrong, I use it quite often, but when you take a brand that's as big as the gap and you take a font that just as big and maybe one of the most recognizable, then if begins to look generic.

So because there has been such an uproar over this new logo, Gap is inviting people to send in their own ideas for a new logo. Should be interesting to say the least. It's always difficult to replace things that are icons in pop culture so we'll see if anything can make the public happy.

    oh that martha! {halloween pumpkins}

Oh how I wish I could be as crafty as Martha {and her team that most likely does this stuff for her}. I mean look at these pumpkins from the October issue of Martha Stewart Living. Gorgeous. I can barely cut a scary face in my pumpkins, perhaps this year I"ll try a little harder to make pumpkins half as pretty as these.
